Our year 2023
During 2023 we have pursued our program of training nurses working at health centres in remote regions in the use of ultrasounds with a view to detecting pregnancies at risk and thus diminish mortality of the infant and of mothers in labour.
The machines are provided free of charge by the government and a Canadian foundation and training is provided by competent personnel. This year just under 100 nurses have been trained. Communication through the media (smartphone), more and more in use in Nepal, likewise helps nurses if they run into technical difficulty or difficulty interpreting the images. The result of this training is very palpable: the government has just published national figures for infant and mothers in the pre-natal period: the region of West Nepal where this training has taken place is approaching figures for the West, while previously it was not far from 100 times more common.
As every year, we have conducted surgical camps in remote regions of Nepal. We went back for the third time to Dolpo. We first sent a health agent to Upper Dolpo, a region at an altitude of 4000 meters, to propose that residents with orthopedic problems needing surgery to go to Lower Dolpo. The region of Upper Dolpo is without any medical care. The nearest hospital is a 4 days walk away over snow-covered passes over 5000 meters. We were able to provide surgical treatment to several children from Upper Dolpo. We gave them a small sum to cover the cost of their crossings.
